I clicked on the system prefs and international and then checked the Thai flag in the imput method but although I could write in Thai in Text Edit and Safari, I couldn't change to the Thai flag when using word or ICQ as it is shaded over like it can't be selected. This is despite the fact I can use japanese fonts no problem.I tried to download a seperate Thai font and put it in my Library/fonts folder and now at least I can select the Thai font from the font list in word and type in Thai this way, but when i use the thai font the language flag is still on the English one. Usually when I change to Japanese using keyboard shortcuts the flag changes to Japanese. Is there a way I can assign the downloaded Thai font to the Thai flag so I can quickly and easily change between languages?
The problem is that I suspect Thai fonts would have to be unicodeencoded. As long as applications are Unicode aware, everything is fine(eg TextEdit), but applciations like Word can't use it. The exceptionbeing Japanese fonts since the US version of Office comes with anenabler for Japanese fonts. The Tahi flag is dimmed in Word because there is no non-unicode Thaifont Word can use. Unfortunately, Thai is not a language supported in Office X. The Thailanguage keyboard in the Input menu is unicode based, hence it will notbecome active when you are in Word or any application except, perhaps,Entourage.Gene van Troyer

Hi Paul,You'll need to download and install one of the above keyboards (try the IPA Unicode 6.2 Macintosh Keyboard v1.5) to type IPA text. Downloading the keyboard is fairly intuitive, but installing it on a Mac is a little more complex. We've provided instructions at If you continue to have trouble with the actual text input process once the keyboard has been downloaded and installed, please send an email to and I'll be happy to help you further.
Hello, I've downloaded the "keyboard layout" and installed it properly. However, if I try to use it, for example, in a word processor, I don't get anything different than if I'm just using a standard American English font.
When you downloaded the keyboard, a PDF file should have been included in the package (if you can't find this, send me an email at and I'll send it to you). This PDF contains details of which keystrokes will display which IPA characters.
I just downloaded the keyboard viewer and installed it, but was still having trouble finding the correct keystrokes until I read the pdf that accompanies the keyboard download. That has a really useful set of charts showing the location of the symbols and the vital information about the 'dead' keys. In other phonetic fonts I've used, these have usually been the option key, shift key or a combination of these. In this font, however, the dead keys are the = key, the key. The fact that the latter two have to be accessed using the shift key makes it even more un-instinctive!
I downloaded the keyboard layout and font that goes with it, and set it up according to the instructions, but what I type still comes out in normal English rather than the IPA alphabet I wanted to use. Help?
Before you can use UTF-8, you have to install at least one Unicode font in the font directory (or system font folder). Some free font packages are available for download (extract them into the font folder):
The solution is to find and use a font that covers the characters of your language. From the error in the image above, Thai characters can be fixed using fonts from Fonts-TLWG which can be downloaded from this link. The example shown below.
For your convenience, this library collected 96 TTF files in an optional "Free Unicode TrueType Font Pack for FPDF", with useful fonts commonly distributed with GNU/Linux operating systems (see above for a complete description). This pack is included in the Windows installers, or can be downloaded separately (for any operating system).
and downloaded and expanded the Zip file. I opened the Mac Font Book application, then to File > Add fonts. I downloaded the fonts and installed them into Font Book. When I re-started Word, the Thai characters displayed correctly.
Instead of an online keyboard, you could also choose to download a Google extension to your browser for a language input tool. The Google Input Tools extension allows users to use input tools in Chrome web pages, for example.
The best Windows fonts for general use appear to be Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New, and Segoe UI. The versions supplied with Windows 7 and 8 include all the symbols on the IPA Chart. Other useful fonts are available for free download from www.sil.org.
Times New Roman* and Arial* are standard, professional fonts used in print and are legible for beginning Arabic learners. Other fonts that come on PCs include Traditional Arabic, Arabic Transparent, Arabic Typesetting, Aldhabi, Andalus, Sakkal Majalla, Segoe UI, Simplified Arabic, and Tahoma.* Other fonts that come on Macs include Al Bayan, Baghdad, DecoType Naskh, Geeza Pro, Geezah, KufiStandard GK, Nadeem, and Arial Unicode MS* (which is on Mac OS X or earlier versions).Unicode fonts available online include Noto (Kufi Arabic, Naskh Arabic, Sans Arabic), Gentium, Source Sans Pro, Charis SIL, Junicode, FreeSerif, FreeMono, and FreeSans.
On Windows or Mac OS X, unzip the .ttf.zip file or download the uncompressed .ttf file and copy the font to your Fonts folder. On Microsoft Windows, this folder is located under the Windows folder on your main disk. On a Mac, this is located under the Library folder on your main disk.
If you would like to contribute glyphs to the GNU Unifont effort, you can download the associated PNG file from the tables above (SMP and CSUR need additions). Then draw new glyphs in the 16-by-16 pixel area that is inside the inner box you see in the image on the left.
The comments in the BDF source font files (downloadable from the Japanese Fonts page) credit the following contributors (in order): Toshiyuki Imamura, HANATAKA Shinya, Taichi Kawabata, Koichi Yasuoka, TOYOSHIMA Masayuki, Kazuo Koike, and SATO Yasunao.
